Interviewing, the choice is yours?

The pre-interview statement, that we often hear when preparing a candidate for an interview is.. “I will be interviewing them, as much as they are interviewing me” No, no, and no. We call this the “kiss of death”. This philosophy is poor for even the most sought after and highly skilled candidate.  Why?  Because if the company does not want to move forward in the process with you, then what YOU think of THEM is irrelevant.  Instead, all candidates from senior management to entry level should adopt the attitude of engaging in a genuine business conversation to understand the opportunity.  For example, “What are we looking to accomplish with this role? How do you see me achieving the goals we discussed? (Always use more positive language versus asking, “What is it that you are looking for me to do?”)  Ultimately, if the meeting is positive for the professionals on either side of the desk, then there is a decision to be made regarding the future.

If no offer is extended, then the candidate has no decision to make. Of course, making a change is scary and it is imperative that both parties execute the proper due diligence before moving forward with any decision; however, the difference is where and how you spend that energy.  We know that navigating these murky waters solo can always improve with the help of a professional recruiter.  We can reassure you that you are “not in this alone”.  Accounting professionals are in demand and the market is ripe for opportunity to advance and grow with the right organization.

Florida’s construction industry experiences boom

Florida construction industry

The construction industry grew in 39 states this past year, according to analysis of Labor Department data by the Associated General Contractors of America.

Florida led the growth, adding 41,900 jobs between September 2013 and September 2014. While it was closely followed by significant gains in California, Texas, Illinois and Louisiana, the state’s massive addition of jobs has the state scrambling to find qualified workers to fill the opportunities.

According to the Sun-Sentinel, carpenters are in the highest demand for the Southern state, but employers are having a hard time finding electricians, drywall installers, painters and even project managers. The source reported that Florida’s issues are reflective of a national trend – 83 percent of hiring managers across the country are struggling to find craft workers and 61 percent of U.S. bosses are finding it hard to pin down qualified construction professionals.

The shortage is partially due to a housing boom currently happening in South Florida. The area is seeing a huge increase in the construction of high rise apartment buildings and needs more labor than ever before.

This increased need for construction workers has been extremely beneficial in terms of wage growth, noted the Sun-Sentinel. Most of the firms in the area have raised compensation or are offering more bonuses than before.

Healthcare industry returns to pre-recession job growth rates

After spending some time as a stagnant industry, the healthcare field is now seeing growth at levels not reached since the recession.

According to a report by the Altarum Institute, numbers between March 2013-March 2014 were disappointing across the nation, with the medical sect averaging an addition of 17,500 jobs each month. Since April, however, this rate has sky rocketed by 50 percent to an average monthly increase of 26,000 positions.

Hospital hiring had been static for the past two years, only adding an average of 1,400 jobs each month. While it still remains a fairly weak area for medical industry job growth, numbers grew exponentially last month, coming in at 6,200 new positions.

The biggest gains came from outpatient care facilities. These organizations increased hiring by 33,000 jobs within the past year, while the outpatient industry in general grew by 62,800 jobs in the past 12 months.

“Two months ago, we were seeing no acceleration in health care employment. However, with the upward revision to July and strong August and September growth, the picture has transformed into a significant jump in the second quarter that has continued through the third quarter,”  stated Charles Roehrig, director of Altarum’s Center for Sustainable Health Spending, in an article in The New England Journal of Medicine.
