After spending some time as a stagnant industry, the healthcare field is now seeing growth at levels not reached since the recession.
According to a report by the Altarum Institute, numbers between March 2013-March 2014 were disappointing across the nation, with the medical sect averaging an addition of 17,500 jobs each month. Since April, however, this rate has sky rocketed by 50 percent to an average monthly increase of 26,000 positions.
Hospital hiring had been static for the past two years, only adding an average of 1,400 jobs each month. While it still remains a fairly weak area for medical industry job growth, numbers grew exponentially last month, coming in at 6,200 new positions.
The biggest gains came from outpatient care facilities. These organizations increased hiring by 33,000 jobs within the past year, while the outpatient industry in general grew by 62,800 jobs in the past 12 months.
“Two months ago, we were seeing no acceleration in health care employment. However, with the upward revision to July and strong August and September growth, the picture has transformed into a significant jump in the second quarter that has continued through the third quarter,” stated Charles Roehrig, director of Altarum’s Center for Sustainable Health Spending, in an article in The New England Journal of Medicine.
